Artist Statment

My name is Karime Penuelas and I am a visual artist specializing in illustration and character conceptual art. As an aspiring character concept artist, my work is driven by my deep curiosity about characters when it comes to storytelling, emotion, and visual design. I believe that they are the heart of any narrative, and it’s through their design that a world truly comes alive. Whether I’m designing a hero with a turbulent past, a villain with a layered psyche, or a supporting character with subtle traits that hint at their own story, It’s my goal to create designs that resonate with audiences on both a visual and emotional level.

My process begins with understanding the essence of the character. Who are they? What do they desire? What struggles define them? From there, I translate these internal qualities into external features—shapes, silhouettes, color palettes, and details—that tell a visual story. I believe that a great character design should be more than just aesthetically pleasing; it should communicate something deeper, whether it’s through body language, facial expressions, or the use of costumes and props.

While I draw inspiration from a wide range of sources, I am always seeking to push boundaries and create designs that feel fresh and unique. My goal is to blend the familiar with the unexpected, fusing iconic elements with innovative ideas to create characters that feel both timeless and new. At the heart of my approach is a dedication to constant growth and exploration. I am driven to experiment with different art styles, techniques, and mediums, always striving to refine my skills and push the limits of what I can do as an artist. I’m also passionate about collaboration, and I value the process of working with others to bring a shared vision to life. Ultimately, my goal is to create characters that not only support the narratives they belong to but also stand as memorable and meaningful designs in their own right.
